Traditional Method Sparkling Wines Have Always Been A Strength Of 13th Street Winery, With A Long Line Of Awards And A Collection Of Accolades Since The First Bubbly Was Made In 1998. This Fine Example Is No Exception. A Blend Of Pinot Noir And Chardonnay, Mainly From The 2010 Vintage - The Pinot Noir For Fruit, Power And Richness And Chardonnay For Structure And Backbone - This Brut-Finished Sparkler Was Fermented In The Final Bottle And Aged Sur Lattes For A Full 18 Months During Which The Bubbles Became Smaller And More Compacted. A Slight Autolytic, Or Toast And Bread Character Also Developed During This Time. After Dosage Of 6 Grams Of Sugar Mixed With Reserve Pinot Noir Was Added, The Wine Was Aged A Further 3 Months Before Release To Allow All Elements To Integrate. This Wine Was Not Exposed To Oak And Did Not Undergo Malolactic Fermentation.

On The Palate, The Mousse Is Remarkably Rich, Fine And Mouth-Filling. The Acid Is Alive And Bright Throughout And The Finish Long With Mature Apple, Devon Cream And Toast Notes Dominating. An Excellent And Complex Wine Ideal For Drinking Now Well Chilled (6oc) . Classic Matches Include Poached Turbot With Cream And Button Mushrooms, Dover Sole À La Meunière, Smoked Salmon, Fresh Oysters In The Half Shell, Caviar With Buckwheat Blinis And Crème Fraiche And Double And Triple Cream Bloomy Rind Cheeses. This Medium-Sweet Riesling Is A Result Of Careful Blending Of Off-Dry And Very Sweet Riesling Wines In Order To Achieve The Desired Style In This Bottle. We Aim To Make Neither A Cloyingly Sweet And Heavy Wine (With The Commensurate High Price Tag) , Nor A Simple Off-Dry, Inexpensive Riesling Of Which There Are Already So Many Good Examples In Our Region. Instead, With Both The Retail And Restaurant Consumer In Mind, We Pursue A Style Somewhere In The Middle.

Rick Vansickle Of Winesinniagara.Com Scored The Wine 92 Points When He Tasted It In September Just After Bottling. He Described It Thus: Now, This Is Something. It Was Just Bottled When I Tried It, And Will Be Released In Time For Christmas With A Classy New Label. A Warm, Inviting Nose Of Swirling Spicy-Creamy Goodness That Combines Baked Apple, Poached Pear, Stoney Minerals And Just A Touch Of Citrus. Beautifully Elegant And Finessed On The Palate And Already Showing Fine Balance Between Ripe Fruit, Cream, Spice And Acid. It’s Lovely Now But Will Be Better On Release In December And After A Few Years In The Cellar.

The Beauty Of A Wine Like This Is That In A Vintage Such As 2011, Having Access To So Many Grape Varieties, Each With Its Own Contribution Of Character And Structure, Allows A Skilled Winemaker To Blend The Right Amounts Of Each To Secure A Final Product That Is Both Perfumed, Rich, Flavourful And Yet, Balanced With The Right Amounts Of Acidity And Youthful Freshness. Meant To Be Enjoyed In Youth Whilst Most Aromatic And Fresh, This Vibrant White Combines The Fine Acidity And Green Herb And Citrus Notes Of Riesling And Sauvignon Blanc With The Seductive Perfume And Mellow Richness Of Gewurztraminer, Musqué And Viognier.

Every Year, Winemaker Jean Pierre Colas Tries Something Different In Search Of Unique And Interesting New Wine Styles. Often It’s A Response To The Particular Weather Conditions Experienced In The Growing Season. Sometimes, The Experiment Is A Test Of New Coopers Barrels Or A Special New Piece Of Winemaking Equipment. From Time To Time It’s A Trial Using Fruit Sourced From Of A New Vineyard Site. Often It’s Simply The Love And Passion Jean Pierre Has For His Art Form, Winemaking, And Special Wines That Come From A Lot Of Thinking, Blending And Sampling. ...The Result From 2011 ....Bgpp Or What We Think Is Bloody Good Pink Pinot!

2010 Essence Pinot Noir

The 2010 Vintage In Niagara Was Hot And Dry. The Result Was A Good Level Of Ripe Fruit Across The Board. The Skin To Juice Ratio On The Grapes Was Relatively High So The Wines Are Both Tannic, Dark And Full-Bodied. Mouth-Filling, Remarkably Flavourful And Yet Juict And Succulent With A Very Long Cleansing, Complex Finish And Fairly Grippy Tannins For A Pinot. This Wine Should Be Served Cool At 18'c Or So, In Fine Burgundy Bowls Alongside All Manner Of Poultry, Wild Birds, Semi-Ripe Alpine Cheeses And Flavourful Beef Or Veal Dishes.

The 2011 Vintage In Niagara Had Its Share Of Challenges And Yet In The End, Many Will Agree That It Was An Excellent Overall Vintage. A Cool Damp Spring Delayed Bud Burst But A Wonderfully Dry And Warm Summer Helped Vines To Catch Up From The Slow Start. As The Sun And Heat Persisted Well Into August, We Found Grapes Were At A Level Of Ripeness Rarely Seen At That Time Of Year. Many Felt 2011 Might Be Shaping Up To Be The Vintage Of The Decade When All Of A Sudden, The Rains Arrived And Seemed Content To Remain, And Remain, And Remain Well Into September. This Put A Lot Of Pressure On Wine Growers And The Question, “Do We Pick Shy Of Perfect Ripeness, Or Wait Until The Sun Returns?” Was On Everyone’s Mind. In Most Cases, Wineries Chose To Do A Little Of Both - Picking The Most Disease Sensitive Varieties With The Thinnest Most Delicate Skins That Simply Couldn’t Endure More Rain, And Left Those Hardy Varieties Whose Resistance To Moisture Would Allow Them To Benefit From Weeks More Hang Time In To Achieve Perfect Ripeness, Even If The Risks Were Great.

2010 Essence Syrah

Opaque, Black Purple Hue With A Very Fine Pink Meniscus, The Appearance Suggests A Wine With Power And Density. On The Nose, Spice, Sausage Meat, Violet, Blackberry, Cracked Peppercorn And Dark Earth Tones Abound. The Palate Offers A Medium-Full Weight With Satisfyingly Warm Alcohol (14.3%) , Fine Densely Layered Fruit Tannins And A Long, Long Finish. Although Ripe And Rich, The Acid Level Is Just Right, Supporting The Wine With A Fresh And Yet Round Mouthfeel. Still A Very Young, Somewhat Shy Wine, So If Consumed Within The 18-24 Months Of Bottling, Decanting Is Highly Recommended, Or Sipping Over Several Hours In Large Bowled Glasses In Order To Allow The Wine To Fully Express Itself With Aeration. If Cellaring Is Preferred, DonT Hesitate To Leave This Wine In Your Cool, Damp Cellar Through 2020 Or Beyond.
2010 Meritage

2010 Was One Of The Hottest And Driest Vintages In The Past 20 Years. Day After Day Provided Delightfully Warm Days Which Came After An Earlier Than Normal Bud Burst In The Spring. All This Meant Most Niagara Vineyards Were Ripening Ahead By As Much As 3 Weeks Over Normal By The Time August Arrived. As Our Winemaker, Jean Pierre Colas, Became Convinced That The Weather Was Here To Stay, He Made Decisions In The Vineyard To Maximize Yields While At The Same Time, Maximizing Fruit Quality.

In Challenging Vintages Such As 2011 When Rain, Sun, Heat And Cold All Share The Stage, Blended Wines Such As These Are Often Amongst The Most Interesting And Offer Remarkable Value. Our Third Vintage Of This Popular Wine, This Blend Celebrates Both Our Love Of Fine Art, On Display At The Winery, As Well As The Liquid Art Of Our Master Winemaker Jean Pierre Colas. The Artist’s Palette On The Label Is Symbolic Of The Assemblage Of Grape Varieties In This Wine Each Contributing Its Own Unique Character, Just As A Fine Artist Requires A Selection Of Many Hues To Capture A Complete And Satisfying Image On Canvas.
