Very fun beach town on the caribbean side. Beautiful beaches, laid back town, lots of activities. Another top pick of mine.
A long freakin haul but OH-SO-WORTH IT!!! Absolutely amazing. Advanced prep & maybe even training needed. We hiked to the shelter first day, reached summit and went all the way back down second day.
The most amazing volcano in the country, IMO. At night, if you're lucky you can see it spew red lava. This natural hot springs resort is almost equally amazing.
This is where the leatherback turtle goes to lay its eggs. You can just go to lay on the beach.
Caribbean side, fun town. If you can time it right, go to Carnival (October-ish). One of the best times I've ever had. Food, music, dancing for days on end.
The Barva volcano is here. Cloud forest, rainforest, most biodiversity of the country.
Had the amazing fortune of participating in turtle conservation efforts on one trip. Great park, beach. Have to get there by plane or boat if I remember correctly.
I loved seeing all the volcanoes, so if you can get to them...go. This one is pretty easy to access.
A pretty touristy (but still interesting) tour of a coffee plantation. Head's up, you can buy Cafe Britt in ANY grocery store in the country for cheaper. Save your $ and buy it there instead.
A chain of bakeries all over CR. Freakin delicious. I still crave some of their breads/pastries on the regular. VERY cheap and easy when traveling around.
Notorious for pick-pocketing- be mindful. A great place for souvenirs & great local stuff. Near Coca Cola bus station (where most buses depart for tourist locations). Again be careful for pickpockets.
White water rafting. Do it. I think I went 3 or 4 times over the times I've been there.
Perhaps the most touristy of all the beach towns, which I don't tend to like. However, if that's your thing, it's great. I will say that the most amazing sunsets I've seen were in Jaco.
Very fun bar...tons of college students (nationals and international exchange students) frequent here
